Hi Hoolie, I donít know if you remember me, but you took my picture when you played
the Waupaca County Fair, and itís on your webpage. Iím the Mayor of Fremont Wisconsin, and when you played at the Northstar Casino, me and two hunting buddies went to see you guys, and we were terribly overserved and you let us backstage, and we even pranced around on stage with you for a number. My buddy Larry threw up in the back of a yellow pickup truck later. Anyway...
About 8 years ago, I got married. (Second time.) When my new wife met my hunting buddies, we got to talking about farts, and she said, in all honesty, ìYou know, I never farted until I married Joe.î My longest hunting buddy-- Glenn Glenn Peckerhead said, without missing a beat, ìOf course you didnít, you never had an asshole until you married Joe.î What followed was the record for the longest laugh ever at hunting camp.

Once a Yooper, always a Yooper, I guess... even though I have lived in the Denver area now...

Hi.... the fair was pretty small but you guys were a great experience. Once a Yooper, always a Yooper, I guess.... even though I have lived in the Denver area now, longer than I was fortunate enough to live in da Yoop. . . . itís still home. I was really happy that you played The Last Frontier at the concert... itís my favorite, I guess because it is so very true. I was surprised at the show that you put on   a lot more to it than I expected. It was good. Very good.

I would like an album of just the songs of the area  no gas and no big butts....just the area!! That is the essence of what you guys are all about, after all and I wouldnít have to
make my own tapes anymore.

Heard the Second Week of Deercamp on a local station here in the Denver area one time.... the DJ kept saying, ìlshpeming, Wisconsinî, and what I can only assume was a fellow Yooper called him ( I was driving to work at the time and unable to do it so I was glad that someone called in and straightened it out) and it sounded like she gave him a lot of attitude about itÖ.he sure apologized, It also created quite a fuss with some listeners and some ìseriousî hunters....it sure made for some great listening!!!

Well just wanted you to know that I think that your songs about the local stuff are just wonderful. They sure do capture the heart and soul of the area and the people and the attitudes. Attitudes?? We got attitudes? Ok ok  a little   but they still need to admit that the mitten is the mitten and Upper Michigan is da Yoop!!!
Thanks for a great evening Gail .... of Newberry /  Denver

I wanted to write and thank youguys for making our convention this year a LOT more fun. I am staff at MSEA and the GA is our big meeting once every two years. For me it usually is a loooooooooong working weekend. Your show broke up the events and was a great success. We learned that some of our "down lander" members are big fans of yours and were really excited to get to see your show in person. Well worth what we paid for it, in public relations alone.
Thanks for your patience with the venue and the check.

Lynn,

I wanted to thank you for the fantastic performance by Da Yooperís at the 2001 National Baby Food Festival. The crowd was great! In fact it was as big as the largest crowd we have ever had on a Thursday night -- this includes ten years of national touring acts. After the show I heard several positive comments from the crowd about how funny the show was, how personable everybody in the act was, how long the show was, and how much they enjoyed the autograph signing session between sets. My kids cannot stop singing Fishing With Fred, Diarrhea, and The Second Week of Deer Camp.

It was a wonderful performance by Da Yooperís and we are looking forward to working with You guys during our 2002 festival!

My family has a tradition that on September 20th each year, we play two special songs: Happy Birthday Fungus Face and Rotund Family in memory of my late father, Don. 2001 is our 7th year of family sing alongs.
I am a Troll who has been a Da Yooper fan for many years and gave dad a gift of the first 4 tapes. Needless to say, he was hooked...and would drive his wife crazy humming Da Yooper melodies while cruising the roads of the midwest in his pickup and 5th wheel. He truly enjoyed the clever lyrics and wide variety of music styles. Thanks for the great songs that we use to celebrate his life and memory. This year, we will be thinking of Dad and Joe P. as a resounding, off-key rendition of Yooper music is sung. Thanks for the memories. Lynn, a Saginaw County Troll

My husband, Michael Raines (the Undersheriff of Eaton County), laughed so hard I thought Iíd have to pick him up off the floor between the bleachers at some of your songs weíd never had the treat to hear before! As a law enforcement professional with over 25 years of experience on the job, heís seen a lot of sadness and the tragic events that happen when innocent people become the victim of heartless criminals and itís a very welcomed opportunity to be able to laugh and enjoy life any time we can. His jobís tough (because thatís the territory), but one he likes and respects doing in order to help others. He doesnít make others laugh like you do, but he does have a good sense of humor and certainly appreciates yours. Thank you so much for the laughter, the unique and enthusiastic comedy, and the great time that only the customs and culture of DA YOOPERS has to offer! Keep up the great work yous guys and Lynn!

My aunt lives in the soo, so i hope to get to see thetourist trap some day.

Again, bravo on the concert. I was sitting right behind Lynnís friend (the two kids and a blanket) while my dad got there an hour before the concert started, he wanted to sit in the stands. The whole thing was great, thanks again for comming.

Oh, and Hoolie, great job on the the cowbell, it added a rustic flavor to the music. :)

Subject: New CD

I heard this story many years ago and thought you might be able to use it. At least you might get a chuckle out of it. I love your new CD. I made a tape copy of it so 1 could play it in my truck and other places. I drive a 240 ton dump truck at a taconite mine up here in the northeastern part of Minnesota and was listening to the tape while I was driving. I was laughing so hard that I was crying. The other guys would come by and wonder what the hell was wrong with me. here I was at work and I was laughing??? They were ready to call the guys in the white coats and padded wagonsÖÖ   keep up the good work. I think your stuff is great.!!!

Jake and his mule...

Jake and his mule

Farmer Jake had a nagging wife who made his life miserable. The only
real peace that he got was when he was out in the field plowing.
One day when he was out in the field, Jakeís wife brought his lunch to
him. Then she stayed while he quietly ate and berated him with a
constant stream of nagging and complaining. Suddenly, Jakeís old mule
kicked up his back legs, striking the wife in the head, and killing her
instantly.
At the wake, Jakeís minister noticed that when the women offered their
sympathy to Jake he would nod his head up and down, but when the men
came up and spoke quietly to him, he would shake his head from side to
side.
When the wake was over and all the mourners had left, the minister
approached Jake and asked, ìWhy was it that you nodded your head up and
down to all the women and shook your head from side to side to all the
men?î
ìWell,î Jake replied, ìthe women all said how nice she looked, and her
dress was so pretty, so I agreed by nodding my head up and down. The men
all asked, ëIs that mule for sale?í and I shook my head, no.î

Another idea is to make a movie about da U.P. based on your songs, starting out with a transplant returning to da U.P. along US-2 in a beat up truck to the transplant song, and all da adventures the transplant and his / her family have as they rediscover their U.P. roots!

What do you think?

Sunk into the gutter...
Wednesday, October 09, 1996

Da Yoopers
Da Yoopers Tourist Trap
Ishpeming, Mi.

Dear Jim:

I am returning the recently purchased CD ìOne Can Short of a Six Packî as being totally without redeeming value. After ìSecond Week of Deer Campî you proved that you did not have to be relegated to being a ìOne Hit Songî group. ìFishing with Fredî, Rusty Chevroletî and several others were witty, clever and well done. But now you have sunk into the gutter. It is no wonder that we never hear any of your songs on Chicago radio anymore.

This collection of double entendre scatological garbage has to be embarrassing to you. I note with interest that in the CD jacket you put out a request for song ideas. That is like Mike Holmgren jumping over the end zone wall and asking one of those funny guys with the foam rubber yellow triangles on their heads for advice on passing plays!

You can exchange this with something you are proud of, or just try and sell it again to some other unsuspecting FISH who comes up north on vacation.

Regards, a former fan of the Yoopers.

Have waited a long time to get to see you and it was definately worth the wait. I have 6 of your cassettes and will be going out for the rest very soon. I can hardly wait to hear your Christmas CD. With the attitude of most performers today, it it refreshing
to see a group who enjoys getting out and meeting their fans up close and personal. Thank you for a great evening of fun and entertainment

Hey! We saw you guys at BaRF (Black River Falls) and thought the show was great! Canít wait to catch you again! I really wanted to compliment you on your writing and performing ability. The CD Jackpine Savage is by far your best in terms of musical complexity. Armchair Quarterback rules. Yooper Snow Rocket makes me want to fix up an old snowmobile and head north. Ice Shackers in Paradise makes me long for winter. Super Duper Yooper Love Machine is the best! (Iím a hard rock fan).l think Jim Bellmore is a great writer and guitar player. He brings alot to the group. I really appreciate the musical talent of the whole group. Keep up the good work and hopefully see you soon. Jim Casetta
PS went to Da Tourist Trap this summer and spent lots of money!

Eagerly awaiting another album...

Dear Yoopers,

How are you all? I donít know if you remember, but a couple years ago I wrote you a bit of fan mail and asked for all of your autographs on a sheet of paper (which Iíd enclosed) and was delighted to get a hand-written response from yaíll AND the coveted autographs! Theyíve been framed and hung on my wall ever since. Iíve been a huge fan of yours since ìYoopaneseî. I own every album. Including ìJackpine Savage.î.
ìCulture Shockî will always be my favorite, followed by ìYoop It UPî, ìJackpine Savageî (the song ìJohnny Peckanenî is awesome) and ìOne Can Short of A 6-Packî.
Anyhow, Iíve enclosed an album that I myself have written, performed and recorded, and itís yours to keep. if you wanna release it under the You Guys Records label, Iíd love to negotiate that, but if you just warina keep it as a gift from a fan, thatís cool, too! That was my intent anyway, the record deal mention was just in case youíre interested.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy your stuff, and even if you donít: TOUGH, youíre stuck with it. And I better not find out you tossed it in the trash, either!
You guys take care and Iím eagerly awaiting another album.

Sincerely,
Eric North

ìNo Smoking Pleaseî

ìNo Smoking Pleaseî

I recall the day Granddad,
Who stayed with us one summer,
Made a trip to the out house
Which proved to be a hummer.
ëTwas the same day my Dad
Finished painting the kitchen green.
Heíd just cleaned up the mess heís made
With rags and gasoline.
He tossed the rags in the shanty hole
And went on his usual way
Not knowing that by doing so
He would eventually rue the day.
Now Granddad had an urgent call,
I never will forget!
This trip he made to the little house
Lingers in my memory yet.
He sat down on the out house seat,
With both feet on the floor.
Then filled his pipe with tobacco
And struck a match on the outhouse door.
After the Tobacco began to glow,
He slowly raised his rear:
Tossed the flaming match in the open hole,
With not a sign of fear.
The Blast that followed, I am sure
Was heard for miles around;
And there was poor olí Granddad
Just sitting on the ground.
The smoldering pipe was still in his mouth,
His suspenders he held tight;
The celebrated three-holer
Was blown clear out of sight.
When we asked him what had happened,
His answer Iíll never forget.
He thought it must be something
That he had recently et!
Next day we had a new one
Which my Dad built with ease.
With a sign on the entrance door
Which read: No Smoking, Please!
Now thatís the end of the story,
With memories of long ago,
Of the little house, behind the house
Where we went cause we had to go!

Hi Anna, Thanks. I didnít realize it if I did, but I was probably just excited or
something to have found Da Yoopers after my years-long-search for the tapes. Oops. Da tapes.
I really have been looking for ìThe Second Week of Deer Campî for a long time. Never dawned on me to look online. I been lookin at music stores, etc. But I live in California so thatís probably the problem. I only laughed for six hours after I found your site. I used to live in Minnesota when I was a kid. Is that sorta a yooper?

Thanks again.

I was on Google innocently looking for the lyrics to a Eubie Blake song. It is an unusual song about a ladiesí man. I think the title is ìIím a [something or other] Man.î The dash is the part I canít remember.
Anyway, somehow Google brings up ìIím a Troll Manî and directs me to Da
Yoopers website. Having spent my share of vacation time in the UP as a born
and bred Michigander and coming from a deer hunting family that has a camp at
Big Bay I couldnít resist the invitation.
Now here it is a half-hour of laughter later and Iím crying, Iím so homesick. I donít know
who you guys are but you have one funny website.

Hoolie stories...

We like those true stories by hoolie.

Tommy Quayle suggests that hoolie write up the story about convincing Harold he was invisible - so he could go into Charlie Richards to get them all some candy. Then when he was walking out charlie says ìHarold, what do you think you are doing? etc.
Jim - you could tell them the story about when your friend Tom Cat dropped you off after getting thrown out of the Royal at last call, and drove around the corner and crashed into the car - eating a taco. then the Ishpeming police showed up and gave him a ticket for an improper right turn - even let him drive home - guess that guy could hold his liquor - or the cops were a little more lenient in those days, huh? we did get the old car fixed up pretty good, hey?

Anna - say hi to Jim and Norma for me, eh?

Gentlemen?

In September it was my privilege to visit your elegant establishment. While there I purchased several of the rare collectibles that were so generously offered.
The ex-friends to whom these items were given have, without exception, retained Attorneys and are seeking recompense for numerous grievances. Iíll not press the sordid details on you but, the claims range from mental anguish to a miscarriage by a blooded Coon Hound.
Under these circumstances, I have no recourse but to beg you to supply a catalog listing the merchandise that is available. Thusly armed, I can retaliate these offences by ordering more material from your honored organization and exonerate my besmirched reputation before a jury of my peers.
In other words, please send a catalog.
