Ammonites are a rather large and diverse group of marine animals that were around during The Devonian Period and survived through the Cretaceous, approximately 400-66 million years ago. They are precursors to modern coleoids, which include octopuses, squid and cuttlefish. These particular ammonites were around during The Mesozoic Era and got their name because their shells resemble a tractor wheel!
